Sauce Packaging Re-design

Carfagna’s Sauce Concept Project

At my local grocery store, there is an entire aisle filled with an assortment of pasta sauces. However, how do you know which sauce is the best? Do you choose by price? Or by how much you enjoy the packaging? What drew my to Carfagna’s pasta sauce initially was the fact that it was packaged in a mason jar like a sauce that my grandma would make with a summer’s harvest of fresh tomatoes. During my time working for an Italian company, I learned that recipes made by “Nonna,” or grandma are always the best ones. The issue I had with Carfagna’s sauce packaging was the amount of different fonts and the hierarchy of information was all over the place.

Carfagna’s sauce is delicious, however, their packaging needed some help, so I chose to revamp their Original Family Recipe Pasta Sauce packaging. Through my research I discovered that Carfagna’s Italian Market is a small family business in Ohio with a rich history of traditions and recipes. On their sauce packaging, they really wanted to highlight the history of their business. I decided to line the upper border of the label with the scalloped edged awning from their original storefront using the bright red, white and green of the Italian flag that is prominent with their brand. On Carfagna’s website I discovered a fun, round logo of theirs that had their name laid out really nicely, so I decided to utilize that on the new packaging. Not only did I streamline the amount of fonts used in the design, but I condensed the blurb on the side of the jar with their story of their Nonna’s sauce and gave it a title to let people know what they would discover through reading it.
