Swedish Fish Ad

Swedish Fish Illustration

This was my first time experimenting with Gouache, but it wasn’t my first time painting. I decided Gouache would look nice because it would give the box and the water a glossy effect and make the piece brighter.

I ended up scanning in my finished piece and touching it up slightly in photoshop in order to create it into a billboard.

The animated approach could fit into an advertising campaign for Swedish Fish because they target audiences of all ages. Due to its animated nature, it would appeal to younger audiences, and since the candy has been around a long time, older generations love it as well. Swedish Fish is a unique candy because it is loved and appreciated by people of all ages.

My Inspiration

My Inspiration

Above are a couple of Swedish Fish ads that I gathered inspiration from. The campaign for Swedish fish is called “A friend you can eat” and the ads play with the idea of different animals or people being made into food, such as a grilled teddy bear and a kitten sandwich. Through observing the existing ads, I discovered a way to give the Swedish Fish ad campaign new life by using a more playful, animated approach.

For this illustration, I originally planned on doing a realistic approach with a few fish pouring out of the box and keeping their true form. However, when seeing the water splash on the box, I envisioned a waterfall flowing from the box and having the fish swimming out and turning into fun, animated fish.
